Reddit for research, without the endless feed
Reddit is full of first-hand experience: what people use, what went wrong and what they would do differently. Its home feed is built to keep you scrolling. During a session Raami empties the feed and leaves the communities, discussions and search you need for work.
The home feed shows no posts, r/popular and r/all are closed, and the sidebar of recommended communities is hidden. You reach discussions through search and through the communities you open yourself.
The same home page before and during a session
The screenshots show an example page with the structure of Reddit's pages. Raami's content script hides the same parts on Reddit. The communities, posts and comments are demo data.
What is hidden and what stays
- Emptied: the feed on the home page.
- Closed: r/popular and r/all.
- Hidden: the sidebar of recommended and popular communities, the list of recently visited communities, and the carousel of highlighted posts at the top of a community.
- Stays: search, communities and discussions with their comments.
Unlike on YouTube, comments stay: on Reddit the discussion is what you came for. Hiding works in both modes. In block mode, a discussion added as a source of the task opens without the sidebar.
In observe mode, each discussion is asked about on its own
In observe mode Reddit opens, but Raami watches it. Each discussion is its own unit, so allowing one doesn't open the rest of Reddit.
- A discussion that matches the task stays open. If its title matches the task's keywords, it gets the same time as any matching page.
- A discussion off the task is asked about within seconds. If the title doesn't match the task's keywords, the question comes quickly and soon covers the page.
- Time on Reddit adds up. When the time spent on the site during the task passes 20 minutes, every new discussion is asked about soon after you open it, and a yes gives the site a new time budget.
- The front page can't be allowed. On the home page and in feeds, the question offers only I'll look for 30 s and Return to work, so one answer can't open all of Reddit.
- Yes, it belongs adds only that discussion to the task's sources.
When Reddit is part of the work
In observe mode Reddit is open by default, so you don't need to allow it. In block mode only the task's own pages open: if you need a discussion, ask the assistant to allow it. The assistant adds single discussions as sources, never all of Reddit.
If Reddit has no place in your work, block it for yourself: tell the assistant “block reddit.com”, or add it to My blocks in Settings. Your own blocks apply in observe mode.
Limits
- The old interface (old.reddit.com) is not cleaned, although Raami still watches it.
- Reddit's mobile apps are outside Chrome, so Raami doesn't see them.
- Hiding relies on Reddit's current page structure. When Reddit changes it, parts of the feed may show until Raami is updated.
The discussion's title is read on your computer so it can be compared with the task. It stays on your computer like the rest of Raami's data.
